Safety Tips When Using Knife At A Commercial Kitchen

Are you a newly hired trainee chef at a commercial kitchen? If yes, you should be aware that the utmost care and proper handling of butchery equipment products like the kitchen knife are important. Even if you have undergone relevant skills training in knife handling, these safety tips I’m going to share will come useful when already exposed in a busy commercial kitchen environment.

Tip #1 – A sharpened knife is better than a dull knife

Whether you are about to use a boning knife or butcher knife, it’s a must that you check if it’s sharp enough. Why? Using a dull knife pose more danger because you are more exposed to accidental cuts if you struggle while cutting. A sharpened knife is safer as it allows you to cut with ease and accuracy. So, how can you maintain the sharpness of a knife? Use a knife sharpener device. Most commercial kitchens are equipped with the right tools and equipment and that includes a sharpening stone, F dick sharpening steel or an electric knife sharpener.

Tip #2 – Pick the right knife to do the job

Variety of knives are commonly found in a commercial kitchen, from boning knife bearing the popular brato butcher and paring knife. All these knives have specific cutting features and functionalities. For example, Dexter boning knife or F dick boning knife, e, if you are tasked to cut large cuts of meat, a paring knife won’t be very useful, so better choose the cleaver. On the other hand, if you need to cut cooked meat serrated knives would be the best cutting tool to this job. Just a piece of advice, use the knife to where it’s intended to lessen the risks of accidents that could lead to serious cuts.

Tip #3 – Store the knives after usage

One of the safe handling tips that every staff working in a commercial kitchen must follow strictly is proper storage of knives after every usage. Knives are ideally kept in a block or rack. There are also other storage ideas where expensive knives are kept such as knife pouch, knife bags and other protective cases.
